Programme of the course:

  1. Theory of relativity
    • postulates of Einstein's special theory of relativity,
    • properties of time and space in the context of the special theory of relativity,
    • work and energy in the context of the special theory of relativity,
    • Relativity of time intervals and length,
    • Lorentz transformation, spacetime, relativistic dynamics,
    • relativistic energy and consequences of Einstein's equation
      (mass defect, limits of signal transmission)
    • Doppler effect,
  2. Electromagnetism
    • electric and magnetic fields, Maxwell equations,
    • the spectrum of electromagnetic waves
      (types and their properties) 
    • light interference (light intensity, the coherence of light, interferometers)
    • Diffraction (Huygens model)
    • holography
    • light in different media,
    • refractive index, light dispersion, group and phase velocity
    • total internal reflection, birefringence, optical nonlinearity,
    • optical fibers (types and their parameters)
